Are we important to you?

My search on integrated and federated search engine is still moving on. Do we have a choice, I mean a good choice? Up to now, we have tried two federated search engine. We decided to stop subscribing to package A based on the uneffective searching speed. We moved to a new engine, and it was much better in terms of speed. However, we failed to have basic things that we like most – embedded search box on our website! Wow, I need a break on this!

BUILDING A NEW LIBRARY

It’s a wonderful dream to have a good and beautiful library. Looking at PPAS new library really amazed me and knowing that they spent so much on the library really give me an ummph. I believe libraries need to do something urgently about this. Awareness on so much the Internet manage to offer us has creating an impact to libraries. I must say, a negative impact. People will start asking questions, why do we need to spend more on physical library since we can have everything on the net? Why must we still spending so much on physical library when we are also paying a lot for electronic resources? And here come the main issue, access versus ownership. I’m not having as much budget as the amount PPAS has in building up their new library. But I believe, the amount of budget that we have has created a new dimension to my library team. We’ve learned so much on being creative, we’ve learned so much on negotiation skills, and the most important thing is that we’ve learnt so much about putting the customers on top priority.

Resource Sharing

Someone told me that we need to do something on budget constraint. We have to stop subscribing to certain databases in order to manage our budget eficiently. We have an option, says he. Let the users have access to bibliographic information and decide whether full text contents are needed or not relevant at all. The option proposed was libraries in Malaysia should maximise document delivery services in electronic environment. However, I do not buy in this kind of ideas. I think, process of finding information and writing is so different in this digital age. Users tend to access the full text contents, digest them and decide to put on their writings. Or else, they would like to download these documents immediately and refer to them whenever they have time to do it. Making them wait is not an option for libraries. We should be discussing more often on resource sharing aspects especially in this digital age.

RESEARCH & PUBLICATION IMPACT

The library team is currently studying more indepth about research and publication impact. A few librarians from Research Universities (RU) make a statement that other libraries from non RUs need 2 to 3 years to learn more about research impact. What a statement. Measures of research and publication impact exist long before the establishment of RUs in Malaysia. That’s why we are having ISI Web of Science long enough to remember how the tick, red books have changed the way we searched for information even 40 years ago. Librarians should have learnt and advise about research and publication impact long ago. All the best my fellow UniMAP librarians. I challenged everybody to learn more about this besides arranging lunch and dinner for university events!

Local Journals and Magazines

The Library has compiled listing of local journals and magazines and the list is available and accessible via our library website at http://mylib.unimap.edu.my/index.php/en/listing-of-journals-and-magazines. You will find numerous local journals and magazines in various subject areas. Some of the contents are available online, inclusive of current issues and archives. University Press especially for Research Universities have published their issues online to broaden access to their research content. Some of these titles are even listed and indexed by Scopus and ISI Web of Science. Happy surfing.

Welcome to your library for new students and welcome back to the library for all UniMAP students. We have carry out minor changes for our CAI room 1. Beginning this coming semester, CAI 1 will no longer serve as your computer lab. The new CAI which will be called as Infoaccess room will become your laptop zone, fully equipped with network point and electrical socket. Come and try the brand new laptop zone at the library.
